It has come down to this question: Are you a pothead or are you a twihard? We are talking about two of the biggest phenomenons here in pop culture history: Harry Potter and Twilight. People today are having difficulty deciding where their loyalties lie. I however, have no trouble choosing my side. Boys and girls, I think we can all agree here that Mr. Potter wins this battle. Twilight fans may beg to differ, but I assure you; after reading this post your views are bound to change. Now before Team Edward decides to bite me (or Team Jacob decides to rip me to shreds), I will admit that I am not completely against the whole Twilight franchise. I mean I've seen the movies and read all the books, but that of course does not make me a fanatic. But then again, that makes it fair game for me to compare the two series...
First off, J.K. Rowling is an exceptional writer, and a much better one than Stephannie Meyer at that, because her books are more rich in detail and much more believable (as far as fantasy goes). Even Stephen King said: "The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephannie Meyer can't write worth a [darn]." Now that's a little harsh, but at the same time completely true in some ways. I don't want to spoil Breaking Dawn (the fourth book in the Twilight series) for anyone who hasn't read it, but the ending is a complete waste of time especially after reading 700 and something pages in order to reach it.
The Harry Potter series is better aimed towards both genders as an audience. There is a good mixture of humour, adventure, mystery, and even sometimes a love story on the side. It is also better than Twilight because there are morals in the story worth following by. I'm talking about: courage, sacrifice, love, good conquers over evil, the power of friendship, and that all heroes have flaws. It is harder for me to find morals in the Twilight series (except love I guess). Another point is that I for one find Twilight quite sexist in terms of the characters because Bella is always the damsel in distress and she is constantly relying on Edward to save her. It is particularly annoying in New Moon when Bella is practically a zombie due to moping her head off just because the so called love of her life leaves the town. On the other hand, Hermione Granger of the Harry Potter series, is a clever young lady who is able to take care of herself without clinging to Harry or Ron every minute of the day. Hermione is a character that girls should look up to, not clingy Bella.
Now let's talk about the film adaptations of the two books and the actual talent involved. I'm not saying the young actors involved in Harry Potter are the Clint Eastwoods and Meryl Streeps of our generation, but they sure are better than the Twilight young actors. The audience was able to grow with them throughout the movies because the characters had so much depth. Although maybe I should cut the Twilight cast some slack; it's not their fault they have to follow a cheesy script. I hate how in the Teen Choice Awards (which isn't even a legitimate awards show in my opinion) Twilight wins a countless number of times just because they have good-looking actors. But then of course Twihards will argue that the Twilight cast is actually made up of talented young actors. Oh really? What are the acting qualities that teenage girls find exceptional in the Twilight saga? Is it Taylor Lautner's forced intense expression, Robert Pattinson's beady eyes, or perhaps Kristen Stewart's constant frowning and lip biting? I didn't think so.
Now I don't mind if you enjoy the Twilight saga because of the plot and characters, but if you prefer the series over Harry Potter just because "they have hotter actors," then that is despicable. Choose what you want to believe after reading this post, but Harry Potter will always be the better series in my mind. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, vampires and wizards; my work here is done (for now). Mischief Managed.
I completely agree with your views in this blog.
ReplyDeleteI myself have read all the Harry Potter novels and thought they were always written extremely well while having an amzing storyline at the same time.
I havent read any of the twilight novels, but my sister has, and she always is telling me what is going on, and personally, twilight seems pretty cliche. Your comment about her being the damsel in distress is dead on, because it's always her getting in trouble and relying on others to help her.
Also, the Potter films are much better than the Twilight films. I've seen all the Potter flicks made so far and enjoyed every single one. I've seen the first Twilight and was not very impressed.
I can't really say much more because my views on the Potter-Twilight topic are the same, but I think that you did a fantastic job with this argument giving concrete examples of positives and negatives for the two series.
Also, liked the mischief managed at the end. :)
Great Job!
After reading the Twilight Saga I have to admit that I did enjoy the books and of course reading the books just made me want to watch the movie. I also agree with the previous comment about the Twilight films and how disappointing they were opposed to how much I enjoyed the books. The actors were not the best and I was not completely convinced that these actors even believed their own character's story let alone me believing it! When I came to the end of the forth book, I was unimpressed with the ending to such a favoured series of books.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand with Harry Potter, I have only seen the second, forth and sixth movies, but not read the books.I thoroughly enjoyed the sixth movie; the plot was exciting and I was always wondering what would happen next! The actors all played their parts very well and although Hogwarts is not real, I actually found myself wishing it was!
Your arguements for both sides were very well done and you definitely had me convinced that Harry Potter is much better!
I agree with the fact that Harry Potter is well written. I mean it's a phenomenal book. However, Stephenie Meyer and J.K Rowling have different writing styles. Different writing styles will attract different audience; therefore, some people may think Twilight saga is better than Harry Potter.
ReplyDeleteOverall, it was interesting to read from Harry Potter fans point of view!

ReplyDeleteHa! Your last words gave me a laugh!
I have to admit, when I was in middle school I too gave into the fad of reading the 'Twilight' series. At the time I quite enjoyed it, waited anxiously for each book to come out and even bought the whole series! In the summer between the 8th and 9th grade, I have planned to re-read the series because of how much I enjoyed them in the 7th grade. Well that was the plan... I hadn't even gotten through the first chapter when I started to get bored. Her writing was 'sketchy'. It had no depth, no explanations.
I felt like I couldn't relate because she wasn't giving me enough information.
This was the time when I finally got into the 'Harry Potter' series. And what a difference! Her writing satisfied me! I got the information I was seeking for in the novel and then some! I could see her writing in movie form in my head with each page I read which made the novels more interesting to read. Even though the reading level's on these books aren't particularly high, it's still involves the intriguing and the readers attention of any age. I know that this is a series I will continue to read into my senior years.
As far as the movies go, I completely agree with you here too! As I said in my blog 'Taylor vs. Talent', these teenaged actors and actresses in movies like 'Twilight' can not act. I have seen Taylor Lautner, and Kristen Stewert in other movies, and unfortunately they seem like the same character in every film. There is no difference in their acting style.
The cast of 'Harry Potter' on the other hand, are very believable and natural. I really believed that a Harry, Hermione, and Ron existed! When I saw them acting in other movies, I was shocked to see how different their 'new' character was and how well they played them.
So, yes! I am a 'Harry Potter' fan as well!!
Great Blog!
Can't wait for the last HP movie to come to theatres!
