The Wedge!!!!! on muchmusic!! real music survives and thrives on popular television

Muchmusic has just recently relaunched the iconic independent music show the wedge. Thee new incarnation of the wedge features the legendary Damian Abraham as host: Damain, A.K.A pinkeyes, is the lead singer of the polaris-prize winning experimental hardcore band Fucked Up!, who are known for their wild and intense performances; when they performed at the MTV studios in Canada, they completely trashed one of the bathrooms in the facility, going as far as to destroy the door of the bathroom. Although the nature of the music they play inherently creates a high amount of explosive energy, which is only further amplified by the unique chemistry of the band, Damian is probably the one component of the band that really brings out the fire at performances. With his Deep passion for music-especially hardcore punk rock and down to earth attitude, he is certain to establish a connection with the audience that threatens to destroy whatever venue they are playing in, simply out of the venues inability to contain the energy of the reaction between the band and audience. With such a deeply rooted member of the music community hosting the show, the current incarnation of the wedge may just be the best wedge ever.

The wedge was originally launched in 1992, during the alternative music boom and as a result of the popularity of underground(alternative) music at the time, the wedge became one of the top watched shows on muchmusic at the time. As trends in the music industry shifted the show moved out of its prime-time phase and lost it's mainstream appeal but retained a smaller but more devoted audience of independent music enthusiasts. After the departure of Sokk-Yi-Li, the wedge became little more than a collection of music videos by the most-well know indie musicians. Although the show retained a cult audience, it was at one of it's most mundane stages, and manifested as a almost innane stream of music videos; the only thing attracting it's hardcore following being the quality of the videos rather than the quality of the show itself.

The wedge seemed to be heading into its twilight years, and threatened to slowly fade out of existence. However things took a drastic turn when the CIDC decided that muchmusic had strayed too far from it's musical roots and ruled that the station must reinforce it's rotation with more music videos and music related shows. As a reaction to the ruling muchmusic chose to reinvigorate some it's classic music shows, one of which was the wedge. The reinvigorated version of the wedge has become a truly meaningful experience for music lovers; personal interviews with some of the most cutting-edge, influential and most importantly friendly and likeable indie artists, visits to various locations that been instrumental in the toronto independent music scene as well as venues where the latest indie bands are playing. The entire experience of the Wedge with Damian Abraham is friendly and personal, with almost all creative decisions for the show made by Damain himself, the viewers are given access to a show that is truly authentic in it's protrayal of the independent music scene and fosters a true connection with the viewer. The show is filmed completely live, and has a very independent feel and has many candid impromptu moments such as damian going toboganning with members of Broken Social Scene etc. The Wedge airs live on Muchmusic at 11:00 PM on wednesday nights, and is a beacon of hope for lovers of real unrestricted feral music, standing in direct oppositional to the typical lineup of mindless teen dramas and synthetic bubblegum pop music.

  1. My thoughts exactly. It's good to see much music try and steer away from all of it's teen drama shows and finally get some music played that isn't just the flavour of the month songs at the moment.
