Many shows and movies right now give off the impression that it is all for laughs and jokes and the occasional challenge when you are pregnant. A few of these movies and shows are 16 and pregnant, teen mom and knocked up. 16 and Pregnant is a show about teens who are pregnant and how they handle life before the baby is born, teen mom is an extension showing the lives of a few of the teen mothers.
Originally, it was argued that teen mom and 16 and pregnant were shows that helped to spread awareness to teens around the world about the risks surrounding teen pregnancy. These shows were used as advocates for abstinence in the past although, things have recently changed.
These shows have turned into scandals all over the media, on
magazines, online and on television. Every time you leave the grocery store you see Amber or Macy's names all over the covers of magazines. If you think about it though, do you actually know Macy or Amber's last name, do you see how the father's of their children live their lives every day?

Yes, you get to see the problems and drama between the stars of the show but, does everyone realize that these problems can be avoided, some teens may feel differently. These shows and movies can be dangerous for teens because they may have a different interpretation. They may read pregnancy as the source of all problems and never wish to have children, or some may believe that becoming pregnant may help their chances of becoming famous. It may just seem like another popularity contest, who they've slept with, who the father of their child is and if MTV will be calling them to ask to film their drama filled lives. Is that what really happens though, that you magically get a call and get on television, think back to how many people are on these shows, maybe 4 or 5 sets of parents, and how many of them do you see struggling to keep their relationship a happy or civil one, or how often do you see them fight.
So what is so funny about a couple who end up having a child because of a drunken night at a club, or an abusive girlfriend, or constantly being reminded of the child you gave away. Is it a confidence bust that your life is not actually that bad because you could not go to that concert, or is it a refresher for why you take precautions when it comes to the opposite sex. What ever your reasoning is, remember there is always more than one side to things and that even if you laugh now, if the situations were reversed it would not be as funny.Teenage abortion rates, by age of women at end of pregnancy, women aged 15 to 19, Canada, 1974 to 1997

I just wrote a big paragraph commenting on this, but blogspot went BOOM.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, heres a slightly shorter version. I really do not want these shows on television, they definetly do not tell us NOT to get pregnant, now they encourage it. A lot of teens nowadays think its cool to be pregnant, and I know a lot of girls who want to be, because of watching these shows. I am not encouraged to watch these by my mother, and my friends mom banned her from watching it. Does that tell everyone something? Teen Mom, and all of these silly shows about girls getting knocked up and not being able to take care of their baby, should not be promoted by the media, or on television at ALL. This issue really concerns me, and I always look out for the girls around me, hoping they dont make this mistake. Do you KNOW how expensive diapers are? Ugh.. I babysit, I know I wouldn't be able to care for a baby at the moment, or any time soon. Especially without a stable, well paying job, a husband to help me support the baby, a home, and a whole bunch of other things. You need to be OLDER, and prepared, being pregnant is not fun and games, it takes a lot of work, and I want everyone to know that. Thank you for posting this. Its good for everyone to be aware.
I love the title of this blog, it's very clever and fits the topic well.
ReplyDeletepersonally i dont thin its cool to get pregnant outside of marriage, i have friends that have engaged in sexual activities and they all say they arent ready to have kids .... in my opinion if u are outside of marriage and are not ready to be a parent you simply shouldnt have sex !! because out of one night of fun.... you may end up with a lifetime of responsibility

ReplyDeleteI actually cant watch these shows I think they are totally ridiculous. They idolize teen pregnancy which is not something to look up to. TV producers should not even be giving these people air time it just ads to the drama with these peoples already hectic lives. I like the way you showed both sides of the story by comparing the before and after of the situation. Good job, and interesting topic.

ReplyDeleteI want to start saying...I despise these shows. They are so unaccurate. The Secret life of the American Teenage? Its all relationship and teen pregnancy conflicts...Does that mean every American Teen has a secret life like that? BAD name for a show. That aside, they often don't show the reactions of the parents and the relationship stress between the pregnant teen and the parent...which I would think would be pretty significant or the teen already lives on the own...at 16...?
It's really sad how much publicity these teen moms get. They are SMILING on the front cover of magazines. Are you PROUD that your 16 and pregnant?
