Its that time of year! Where the seiner classes gets to celebrate their four years of hard work. Its PROM! The high school event that everyone looks forward to, something to dress up for, something to get excited about!
But why does this event have such a big reputation?

In the media, prom is such a big deal. They make it seem like it will be the best night of your life. It is the event that is emphasized in every teen movie. When in reality, many people are just setting themselves up for a night of disappointment.
Before the actual night of prom, there is the preparation, which is probably the most stressful part. Finding a date, and the right dress are just some of the more important development steps you have to go through to get ready for ‘the best night of your life’. Also, the make-up, hair and nail appointments, limousine rides, and after party room will hike up the price of prom to the sky! These teenaged girls and guys (more particularly girls) spend hundreds of dollars for one night of your life! You don’t need to buy a $300 dress to have a good time.
What the media likes to say is that during your prom night, you will fall in love and have a happy life with that partner beyond high school and prom. You’ve finally pinned down that person of your dreams, that you thought you’d never get. At the end of the night you both become the Prom Queen and King, what an amazing night!

You don’t need to have all the over-the-top details to have a good time. A good time is made up of good friends, laughter and memorable stories. It’s not what you wore or how much you spent. When you look back at this day, its not the limo’s, hair, and make-up that will make you feel warm, it’s beyond that.
So go ahead, celebrate the achievements, friendships and what the future has in store, not those $700 Gucci shoes.
its sooo true. the media makes prom look like a make or break night !! prom isnt everything ... yes of course its exciting but prom is made out to be a time where if u dont have a date u are worthless, and it is awfull ... prom should just be about having a good time and celebrating your accomplishments .... great article
ReplyDeletePersonally, for prom next year, im not going to take it nearly as seriously as a the media plays it out. It should be a great time, but i'm not gonna stress over it too much. From a guys perspective, I'm going to get a date, probably some dress pants and a nice shirt, and have a good time with friends. Spending huge sums of money just seems pointless, have fun! This was an insightful article, nice job!

ReplyDeleteThe media has created this hype around prom, that it will be the biggest night of your life simply to make them more money. If it was approached as just another dance, then people wouldn't go out and buy expensive designer gowns and rent the limos and so forth. Prom has been glamorized in order for corporations to take more money from you. Im not saying prom isnt a big deal or should be over looked. But get dressed up, and celebrating the next chapter in your life is important. And going to prom is all fine, but overdoing it and going over the top is showing how teens have bought into the corporate views they shape in the media about prom.
You make a lot of valid points in your post. The media does indeed create this perception that prom is going to be the best and most magical time of your life (or at least teenage experience). I'm looking forward to it because I like having fun with my friends and dressing up, but it's more about the people you SPEND time with, not what you SPEND your cash on. It probably will be a fun night, but there are going to be much more exciting events to come in the future. I know some people that fantasize more about their prom night than their wedding day.

ReplyDeleteI don't understand the big hype of prom. For the past couple of months, my friends that were going to prom were freaking out and creating so much drama and confusion. What's the point? It's never going to live up to your expectations. It's a celebration of your 4 years in high school being over. It's not like your wedding."
